For the digitally tethered, life is at the intersection of the virtual and the physical. Experience is continually tempered with a stream of simultaneous meta-interactions, archives, extensions, and reflections of some version of ‘experienced’ reality. The separation between digital space and objectness is the space between human touch, perception, and technology. We train ourselves to experience fragments of the digital world, recombining them into an almost infinite number of configurations to create the semblance of a whole. My work, often featuring truncated or disembodied hand and arms, speaks to the fragmentation and compartmentalization encouraged in digital space by questioning literal and metaphorical touch. The increasing distance between humanity and physical reality bleeds into the infiltration of technology into our collective dream-space, a place my current work mines for both image and reference. My work is focused on the ways in which bodies are quantified and qualified in particular sociocultural situations in terms of the linguistic and image-based reciprocation between bodies, resources, and the digital spaces we inhabit. The process of making the work, deeply entrenched in digital fabrication and the reciprocal translation of the digital to the physical and visa versa, ends with a completely real physical manifestation. This is the underpinning my belief in the power of objectness, things that unapologetically hold their mass in the world.
