Kit N Caboodle, Chiang Mai’s first non-profit and community based co-working space, is kicking off the opening of its brand new location with a group art show on Thai Identity called “อะไรหรือคือความเป็นไทย? | What does it mean to be Thai?” It is open for the spring of 2019 and will be on display until June 1, 2019.

“อะไรหรือ..คือความเป็นไทย? | What does it mean to be Thai?” features the work of Chiang Mai-based artists Jaem Prueangwet, Nate Su, and Jillian Wu. With all artists having different backgrounds and upbringing, the common thread of Thai heritage that weaves them together. The result is a reflection of different facets of Thai identity expressed through mixed media and photography. The exhibition highlights Thai history and modern Thailand as well as identity in a global context. The dates for this show are February 6, 2019 through to June 1, 2019.

Jaem Prueangwet

A resident of Chiang Mai of over 4 years, Jaem Prueangwet prefers to call himself someone who creates arts rather than an artist. Jaem calls his style “poemgraphy”, i.e. a process in which poetry, photography, as well as writing coincide. In this exhibition, he aims to explore the idea of Thainess and being Thai from a personal perspective of someone who’s born and bred in Thailand, who seems at times at peace with being Thai and yet struggles greatly with his own Thai identity.

Nate Su

Having been born to a Chinese/Thai father, Nate learned pretty early on what it means to be Thai. He lived in over four different countries throughout his lifetime and accumulated through his traveling experiences, the perception of foreigners towards Thai people and Thai culture. In this exhibition, he explores 'what does it mean to be Thai' through cultural and social identity. He, himself, who has dual origins and diverse backgrounds will attempt to iterate what he means being Thai. 

Jillian Wu

Jillian Wu is a self-taught artist born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Thai father and Singaporean mother. As a young girl, she traveled between Honolulu, Singapore and Bangkok before living in New York City, Shanghai, and Chiang Mai. She draws her inspiration from and places she has visited, capturing her experiences through delicate layers of watercolor. Her work reflects a mixed identity found in this increasingly globalized world as well as the fusion cultures in modern society.

" นำเสนองาน ของศิลปินเชียงใหม่ Jaem Prueangwet, Nate Su, และ Jillian Wu ซึ่งทุกคนล้วนมี background และการเติบใตที่แตกต่าง แต่ทุกคนต่างมีเส้นโยงใยใต้รากฐานความเป็นไทยเหมือนกัน ผลลัพธ์ของแง่มุมที่แตกต่างในความเป็นไทย ได้แสดงออกผ่านสื่อต่างๆ ภาพวาดสีน้ำ และรูปถ่าย งานนี้ได้แสดงถึงประวัติศาสตร์ไทย สมัยก่อนและสมัยปัจจุบัน ในลักษณะที่เป็นสากล

Jaem Prueangwet

อาศัยอยู่ในเชียงใหม่มา 4 ปี คนที่ชอบสร้างสรรค์ Arts และสไตล์แบบ Poemgraphy ที่ทั้งเป็นบทกวี รูปภาพ ร่วมกันในงานนี้ มีจุดหมายที่จะนำเสนอ idea ของความเป็นไทย แสดงความเป็นไทยในฐานะลักษณะมุมมองจากคนไทยที่เกิดและเติบโตในประเทศไทย คนที่มีความสุขในความเป็นคนไทยและบางครั้งกับการเผชิญอุปสรรคการต่อสู้ในลักษณะความเป็นไทยของเค้า

Nate Su 

ชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีน ได้เริ่มเรียนรู้ความเป็นไทยในรอบ 4 ปีที่ผ่านมาจากการอาศัยในประเทศไทยในช่วงชีวิต ในการที่ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในประเทศต่างๆ มา 4 ประเทศ การสะสมประสบการณ์ผ่านการท่องเที่ยว ทำให้มีความเข้าใจในความเป็นคนไทยและวัฒนธรรมไทย ในงานนี้ มีจุดหมายที่จะนำเสนอ ความเป็นไทย ผ่านวัฒนธรรมและสังคม ผ่านตัวของเขา ซึ่งความที่มี background ที่หลากหลาย จึงนำจุดนั้นมาเสนอว่า อะไร คือ ความเป็นไทย

Jillian Wu

เกิดและเติบใตใน Honolulu, Hawaii โดยพ่อคนไทยและแม่คนสิงคโปร์ เรียนรู้ศิลปะโดยตนเอง (Self taught) และได้เติบโตผ่านการเดินทางผ่าน  Honolulu, Singapore, กรุงเทพ และยังได้มีโอกาศอาศัยอยู่ใน New York, Shanghai และเชียงใหม่ เธอยังวาดภาพจากแรงบันดาลใจ จากคนที่เธอเคยพบปะ ผ่านการวาดภาพสีน้ำ งานของเธอจึงสะท้อน การผสมผสานลักษณะของวัฒนธรรมไทยยุคโลกาภิวัฒน์เช่นเดียวกับการผสมผสานวัฒนธรรมในสังคมสมัยใหม่
