"Not waving but drowning," is an art exhibition by Samak Kosem that addresses the invisible structure that oppresses Muslim women’s gender in the Deep South of Thailand. Samak portrays the tellers as nonhumans, living in the same environment to reflect the sentiments and livelihood of Muslim women, including waves and objects on the beach. He uses anthropological method in his research process and exhibits this exhibition as visual ethnography that links and depicts the situation of nonhuman and gender in Muslim society in the South of Thailand.

“Not Waving but Drowning”, is inspired by the poetry of Stevie Smith by the same name. The poem allows us to try and find possible meanings interwoven between those waves. Both Smith as the poet and Samak as the artist, use waves as a metaphor for complex conditions which are difficult to predict. Underneath the surface, the exposed waves may unveil previously concealed things under affects.

Not Waving but Drowning หรือ “จมหายในพรายคลื่น” นิทรรศการศิลปะโดย สมัคร์ กอเซ็ม ว่าด้วยโครงสร้างอันมองไม่เห็นซึ่งกดทับเพศสภาพของชีวิตผู้หญิงในพื้นที่สามจังหวัดชายแดนภาคใต้ โดยให้ผู้เล่าเป็น “อมนุษย์” ซึ่งดำรงอยู่ในสภาพแวดล้อมแห่งนั้นเป็นเครื่องสะท้อนอารมณ์ความรู้สึกและการดำรงชีวิตของผู้หญิงมุสลิม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นคลื่นทะเลและสิ่งต่าง ๆ บนชายหาด สมัคร์ใช้วิธีวิทยาของมานุษยวิทยาในกระบวนการทำงานและนำเสนอในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ในรูปแบบของชาติพันธุ์วรรณาเชิงทัศนาที่เชื่อมโยงให้เห็นความเป็นอมนุษย์และเพศสภาพที่ดำรงอยู่ในสังคมมุสลิมบริเวณภาคใต้ของประเทศไทย

Not Waving but Drowning มีลักษณะเฉกเช่นเดียวกับบทกวีของ Stevie Smith อันเป็นที่มาของชื่อนิทรรศการ บทกวีอันเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้คนได้ลองค้นหาความหมายที่เป็นไปได้ทั้งหลายอันแทรกสอดอยู่ท่ามกลางริ้วคลื่นเหล่านั้น สมิธในฐานะกวี สมัคร์ในฐานะศิลปิน พวกเขาต่างพูดถึงคลื่นในฐานะอุปมาของสภาวะอันซับซ้อน ยากจะคาดเดา ภายใต้ผิวโค้งคลื่นอันเปิดเผยสิ่งต่างๆ ที่ซ่อนเร้นในผัสสารมณ์
