เอเชียน คัลเจอร์ สเตชั่น มีความยินดีที่จะขอเชิญชวนท่านมาร่วมงานเทศกาลภาพยนตร์นิมมาน ครั้งที่หนึ่ง 2560 “นิมมานเหมินท์” เป็นนามสกุลของครอบครัวคหบดีเก่าแก่ในเชียงใหม่ที่มีมาตั้งแต่ช่วงราวปี พ.ศ. 2443 และยังเป็นชื่อของถนนซึ่งเป็นที่ตั้งของ เอเชียน คัลเจอร์ สเตชั่น กับสถานที่จัดเทศกาลภาพยนตร์งานนี้ด้วย

ตัวถนนนั้นลากผ่านระหว่าง มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่/ดอยสุเทพ กับ เมืองเก่า โดยเป็นย่านนำสมัยของชุมชนทางศิลปะ วัฒนธรรม และการออกแบบ อีกทั้งยังขึ้นชื่อในเรื่องร้านกาแฟ ร้านหนังสือ และพื้นที่ทำงานร่วมกัน (co-working spaces) ของพลเมืองเน็ตที่เดินทางท่องโลก นิมมานเหมินท์ หรือที่คนติดปากเรียกกันสั้นๆ ว่า “นิมมาน” นั้น นับเป็นย่านที่เติบโตเร็วที่สุดในเชียงใหม่ เปลี่ยนจากเขตที่อยู่อาศัยเงียบสงบเมื่อเกือบยี่สิบที่แล้ว กลายมาเป็นเขตที่ดินราคาแพงระยับและร้านค้าหนาแน่นดังเช่นทุกวันนี้ มันจึงได้เวลาแล้วที่เราจะปักหมุดชื่อท้องถิ่นนี้ให้เป็นพื้นที่ของการสนทนาและอภิปรายกันผ่านภาพยนตร์ 

หัวข้อของ NIFF ในปีนี้คือ Lost & Found – หายไปและหาเจอ โดยมี 4 ประเด็นย่อยคือ วัฒนธรรม สถานที่ จิตวิญญาณ และอิสรภาพในการแสดงออก เรามักจะใช้คำว่า “Lost & Found” สำหรับเรียกสถานที่ทำงานในพื้นที่สาธารณะ หรือพื้นที่ที่คนทั่วไปสามารถไปฝากของที่เขาพบเจอและคิดว่ามีคนทำหายเอาไว้ รวมถึงไปตามหาของที่ทำหายไปในที่สาธารณะคืนมา พื้นที่แบบนี้พบได้บ่อยในสนามบิน สถานีขนส่ง โรงเรียน และสถานีตำรวจ ซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่ของการเปลี่ยนผ่าน Lost & Found ในความหมายที่กว้างขึ้น จึงเกี่ยวข้องกับ สถานที่ เวลา และการเคลื่อนที่

ในทศวรรษที่ผ่านมาการปรับเปลี่ยนทางการเมือง เศรษฐกิจ วัฒนธรรม และเทคโนโลยีสื่อสาร-ข้อมูลไร้สาย รวมถึงการเดินทางที่ฉับไว ได้สร้างโฉมหน้าใหม่ให้กับเอเชีย การที่เราจะพยายามรู้ว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นบ้างในประเทศต่างๆ ในเอเชียอย่างเท่าทันนั้นจึงเป็นไปได้ยากยิ่งขึ้น เนื่องจากมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างเร่งด่วนเกิดขึ้นหลายๆ เรื่อง พร้อมๆ กัน เพื่อที่จะทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจต่อชั่วขณะของการเปลี่ยนผ่านในเอเชียนี้ NIFF ครั้งแรก จึงได้มีจุดมุ่งหมายในการสร้างแรงกระตุ้นให้สาธารณชนได้ชมภาพยนตร์ ครุ่นคิด และอภิปรายว่า เรามีอะไรที่สูญหายไป กอบกู้มาได้ และพบเจอในช่วงทศวรรษที่ยุ่งเหยิงนี้

NIFF ได้เชิญผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางด้านภาพยนตร์จากอุษาคเนย์และญี่ปุ่นให้มาแนะนำภาพยนตร์ในภูมิภาค ที่เป็นภาพสะท้อนเหตุการณ์ปัจจุบันทั้งที่หายไปและเพิ่งค้นพบ Lost & Found นั้นมีใจความสำคัญอยู่สี่คำ นั่นคือ วัฒนธรรม สถานที่ จิตวิญญาณ และอิสรภาพในการแสดงออก ซึ่งคำสุดท้ายนี้เอง ที่เราอยากจะใช้โอกาสนี้ในการจัดฉายภาพยนตร์ควบคุมและต้องห้ามจากกลุ่มประเทศในเอเชีย

ภาพยนตร์ในเทศกาลนี้ มีทั้งในแบบหนังยาว หนังสั้น เรื่องแต่ง สารคดี และ หนังทดลอง โดยมีการถาม-ตอบในตอนท้ายของการฉายในแต่ละโปรแกรม และเวทีเสวนา

Asian Culture Station is delighted to invite you to our first Nimman Film Festival 2017. Nimmanhemin is the name of a wealthy Chiang Mai family and also the name of the street where Asian Culture Station and the NIFF’s venue are located. It is positioned between Chiang Mai University’s main campus near Suthep Mountain and the old city of Chiang Mai. It has become a trendy area for art, culture, and design. The area is famous for coffee shops, bookstores and co-working spaces for digital nomads. Nimmanhemin (or in short “Nimman”) is the fastest growing area in Chiang Mai, expanding from what was once a quite residential area merely 20 years ago to the most expensive real estate and most covetous commercial location in Chiang Mai today. It is timely to pin this local name as an area of conversation and discussion through films. 

The theme of NIFF this year is “Lost & Found”, with 4 sub-themes: Culture, Place, Spirit, and Freedom of Expression. The title “Lost & found” is commonly used to refer to an office in a public building or area where people can go to retrieve lost articles that may have been found by others, usually found at airports, bus stations, schools and police station. Lost and Found in a broader meaning has to do with place, time and motion. In the last decade, the shifting of politics, economics, culture and mobile technology (network, information, and transportation) has been affected and created a new face of Asia. This large area of rapid transition makes it more complicated to intimately to stay abreast of these rapid changes in Asian countries. To understand the range of transitional moments in Asia, the first NIFF aims to encourage the public to watch films, contemplate and discuss what has been lost, retrieved or found in this messy decade. 

NIFF has invited Asian film experts from Southeast Asia and Japan to suggest films in the region that reflect the current missing and discovering incidents. As noted above, Lost & Found has 4 keywords: culture, place, spirit and freedom of expression. Following the last keyword, we would like to take the opportunity to screen restricted and banned films from Asia (sans Thailand).

A mixture of short, feature, fiction, documentary and experimental films will be screened along with Q&A and panel discussions at the end of the program.

Films are co-programmed by Chiang Mai Art Conversation, Bodin Theparat [Panya Movie Club], Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa [Filmvirus], Hitomi Hasegawa [Moving Image Archive of Contemporary Art (MIACA)], and Kok Siew-Wai [Kuala Lumpur Experimental Film, Video & Music Festival (KLEX)] and Pimpaka Towira [Extra Virgin]
