Asian Culture Station มีความยินดีที่จะแนะนำสองศิลปินชาวญี่ปุ่นผู้พำนักอยู่ในภาคเหนือของประเทศไทย คุณชิโระ มาสุยามะคือผู้ได้รับทุนของเจแปนฟาวน์เดชั่นเอเชียเซ็นเตอร์ (The Japan Foundation Asia Center Fellowship) เพื่อพำนักอยู่จังหวัดน่าน และคุณอากิระ อิชิกุโระจากโครงการศิลปินในสถานพำนักเปิดใหม่ที่ S.A.C. Residency Program จังหวัดเชียงใหม่

 

คุณชิโระ มาสุยามะเกิดในโตเกียว ทว่ามีโอกาสได้ทำงานในหลากหลายพื้นที่ ซึ่งช่วยพัฒนาการปฏิบัติงานวิชาชีพของเขาขณะพำนักอยู่ต่างประเทศ คุณชิโระอาศัยอยู่ในเบอร์ลินนานถึง 6 ปีและย้ายไปเมืองเบลฟาสท์ในไอร์แลนด์เหนือ ประเทศสหราชอาณาจักรตั้งแต่ปี 2010 ในการเสวนาครั้งนี้ เขาจะแบ่งปันเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับการทำงานและชีวิตของเขาในวัฒนธรรมต่างสังคม รวมไปถึงพูดคุยว่ารากเหง้าหรือถิ่นกำเนิดที่แท้จริงมีคุณค่าหรือไม่ และอย่างไรผ่านการเดินทางของเขา

 

ในทางกลับกัน คุณอากิระ อิชิกุโระเกิดและเติบโตในโยโกฮาม่า เมืองที่ได้รับอิทธิพลจากตะวันตกเป็นแห่งแรก ๆ ของประเทศญี่ปุ่น โยโกฮาม่าถูกบังคับให้เปิดท่าเรือแก่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาในปี 1854 ตามมาด้วยพ่อค้าชาวต่างชาติในปี 1859 จึงมีชาวต่างชาติจำนวนมากอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองโยโกฮาม่าภายหลังยุคเมจิ การได้สัมผัสกับศิลปะแบบตะวันตกกระตุ้นให้เขาสร้างสรรค์เทคนิคทางจิตรกรรมด้วยรูปแบบเฉพาะตัว เราอาจสงสัยว่างานของเขาตบตาเราในทางใดบ้าง และผลงานของเขายังทำให้เราตั้งคำถามว่ามันถูกสร้างโดย การลอกเลียนหรือใช้วัสดุจริงในแต่ละครั้งกันแน่ ซึ่งเขาจะพูดคุยถึงแรงบันดาลใจและการค้นพบของเขาระหว่างอาศัยอยู่และทำงานในเชียงใหม่

ชิโระ มาสุยามะ

มาสุยามะเป็นศิลปินเชิงแนวคิดชาวญี่ปุ่น เกิดในกรุงโตเกียว ประเทศญี่ปุ่นปี 1971 เขาจบการศีกษาระดับปริญญาโทสาขาสถาปัตยกรรมในปี 1997 จากมหาวิทยาลัยเมจิประเทศญี่ปุ่น ตั้งแต่ปี 2002 เขาทำงานอิสระด้วยการเป็นศิลปินพำนักทั่วโลก ประกอบไปด้วย Millennium Court Arts Centre, Northern Ireland (20014-2015), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, South Korea (2008),  Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2006), Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2004-2005), International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York (2002-2003) เขาเคยอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองเบลฟาสท์ของไอร์แลนด์เหนือและคานากาว่าประเทศญี่ปุ่นตั้งแต่ปี 2010 โดยพื้นฐานแล้วงานของเขาถือเป็นศิลปะที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นเพื่ออยู่ในสถานที่เฉพาะเจาะจง ซึ่งมีแรงบันดาลใจมาจากสภาพแวดล้อมที่เขาอยู่ ผลงานของเขานำหลากหลายสื่อมาใช้ อันประกอบไปด้วยการติดตั้ง การแกะสลัก การแสดง วิดีโอ และการถ่ายภาพ

 

มาสุยาม่าจัดแสดงในระดับนานาชาติเช่น นิทรรศการเดี่ยวที่ Fotoaura Institute of Photography ประเทศไต้หวัน Millennium Court Arts Centre (2015) และนิทรรศการกลุ่มมีชื่อว่า “Collective Histories of Northern Irish Art” ที่ Golden Thread Gallery เมืองเบลฟาสท์ และ “Aichi Triennale 2013” เมืองนาโกย่าประเทศญี่ปุ่น (2013) เขาได้รับรางวัลมากมาย นั่นก็คือ ACES Awards, Arts Council of Northern Ireland (2016), Individual Artist’s Award, City of Culture Derry~Londonderry (2013), Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York (2009-2010), Japanese Government Oversea Program for Artists (2004-2005)

 

ปัจจุบันมาสุยาม่าเป็นผู้ได้รับทุนเจแปนฟาวน์เดชั่นเอเชียเซ็นเตอร์ ผู้ถูกเชิญให้มาทำงานศิลปะในประเทศไทย ประเทศอินโดนีเซีย และประเทศมาเลเซีย

 

อากิระ อิชิกุโระ

อากิระ อิชิกุโระคือ ศิลปินชาวญี่ปุ่นที่เกิดในจังหวัดคานากาว่าประเทศญี่ปุ่นในปี 1974 เขาฝึกฝนศิลปะด้วยตัวเองและเริ่มต้นอาชีพในฐานะศิลปินเมื่อเขาอายุได้สามสิบกลาง ๆ  ผลงานเปิดตัวของเขาถูกจัดแสดงในนิทรรศการที่ nca | nichido contemporary art ปี 2010 หลังจากนั้นเขาจัดแสดงผลงานที่งานศิลปะระดับท้องถิ่นและนานาชาติ

นิทรรศการของเขาใน LOKO GALLERY ซึ่งจัดขึ้นในเดือนเมษายนปี 2017 ได้รับความสนใจจากผู้คนอย่างล้นหลาม

 

ที่ผ่านมาอิชิกุโระสร้างผลงานศิลปะด้วยทักษะและเทคนิคการเขียนภาพอันน่าประทับใจเพื่อเล่นกับแนวคิดที่ว่า “ของจริง” และ “ของปลอม” แตกต่างกันอย่างไร คุณค่าของพื้นผิวของภาพคืออะไร ซึ่งคำถามเหล่านี้ได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากภูมิหลังทางประวัติศาสตร์ในบ้านเกิดของเขา หรือเมืองโยโกฮาม่านั่นเอง

Asian Culture Station is pleased to introduce you to two Japanese artists who are currently residing in northern Thailand. Mr. Shiro Masuyama is a grantee of Japan Foundation Asia Center’s  fellowship program in Nan, while Mr. Akira Ishiguro is a first group of resident artists at S.A.C. Residency Program in Chiang Mai.

 

Born in Tokyo, Masuyama leads a peripatetic life, developing his professional practice during his residencies abroad. He was based in Berlin for 6 years before relocating to Belfast, Northern Ireland  in 2010. In this mini talk, he will share his professional and personal experiences living in a cross-cultural context, and discuss whether ‘root’ or ‘authenticity’ has any value when it comes to art.

 

From a different perspective, Ishiguro was born and grew up in Yokohama, a port where early western influences first entered Japan. The city was forced to open doors to the United States in 1854, followed by foreign traders in 1859. After the Meiji period, many foreigners continued to live in Yokohama. His interest in Western Art inspires him to invent unique painting techniques, creating artworks that raise questions about their authenticity. He will share his inspirations drawn from living and working in Chiang Mai.  

 

The talk will be in English and interpreted into Thai. The Q&A session will alternate between the two languages.

About Speakers:

 

Shiro MASUYAMA

MASUYAMA is a Japanese conceptual artist born in Tokyo, Japan in 1971. He completed his Masters in Architecture in 1997 at Meiji University, Japan. Since 2002 he has led a peripatetic life, taking part in residencies all over the world including Millennium Court Arts Centre, Northern Ireland (20014-2015); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, South Korea (2008); Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2006); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2004-2005); International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York (2002-2003). He has been based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Kanagawa, Japan since 2010. His works are fundamentally site-specific, inspired by the environment in which he lives. He uses a variety of media including installation, sculpture, performance, video and photography.

MASUYAMA has exhibited internationally including solo exhibitions at Fotoaura Institute of Photography, Taiwan; Millennium Court Arts Centre (2015) and group exhibitions “Collective Histories of Northern Irish Art”, Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast; “Aichi Triennale 2013”, Nagoya, Japan (2013). He has received numerous awards including ACES Awards, Arts Council of Northern Ireland (2016); Individual Artist’s Award, City of Culture Derry~Londonderry (2013); Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York (2009-2010); Japanese Government Oversea Program for Artists (2004-2005).

 

Currently, Masuyama is a grantee of Japan Foundation Asia Center’s Fellowship Program, working as a resident artist in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

 

Akira ISHIGURO

Akira Ishiguro is a Japanese artist who was born in Kanagawa prefecture, Japan, in 1974. He is a self-taught artist who started his artistic career in his mid-thirties. His debut exhibition was held at the nca | nichido contemporary art in 2010. His artworks have subsequently been exhibited at both local and international art fairs. The exhibition at LOKO GALLERY in April this year made a big impact on audience.

 

Influenced by the history of his hometown Yokohama, Ishiguro has been creating artworks using his remarkable painting skills and techniques, on the themes of “the difference between 'genuine' and 'fake' and what truly determines the value of paintings”.

 

Ishiguro is currently an artist-in-residence at S.A.C. Residency Program, Chiang Mai until January 2018
