Kick the Machine Films ร่วมกับมูลนิธิญี่ปุ่น ยินดีเสนอกิจกรรมเปิดตัว Kick the Machine Screening Room Programme จัดฉายภาพยนตร์ในโปรแกรม Shinsuke Ogawa and Ogawa Pro

โปรแกรมภาพยนตร์ 2 วันเต็ม จัดฉายผลงานสารคดี 3 เรื่องสำคัญของ Shinsuke Ogawa (2479-2535) และ Ogawa Pro กลุ่มร่วมสร้างภาพยนตร์ที่เขาจัดตั้งขึ้น ชื่อของ Shinsuke Ogawa นั้นเป็นหมุดไมล์ที่สำคัญของงานสารคดีญี่ปุ่นยุคหลังสงครามโลก ในช่วงเวลามากกว่า 30 ปีของการรังสรรค์ภาพยนตร์สารคดีอิสระ เขาอุทิศตนอย่างไม่ย่อท้อต่อการเปิดเผยและถ่ายทอดประเด็นความรุนแรงทางการเมือง รวมถึงการเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อต่อต้านอำนาจอันมิชอบของประชาชน และด้วยความเชื่อมั่นในแนวทางของการสร้างภาพยนตร์จากความร่วมมือ Ogawa ก่อตั้ง Ogawa Productions ในปี พ.ศ. 2511 กลุ่มร่วมผลิตภาพยนตร์ภายใต้การวางรากฐานและชี้แนะแนวทางของเขา Ogawa Pro นั้นไม่เพียงแต่มีจุดมุ่งหมายที่มุ่งเน้นการรวมกลุ่มเพื่อสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน แต่ยังขบคิดและแสวงหาทางเลือกใหม่ในการเผยแพร่และจัดแสดงผลงานเพื่อเข้าสู่สายตาของผู้ชมหลากหลายกลุ่ม โดยผลิตผลงานสารคดีออกมามากกว่า 20 เรื่องในช่วงกว่าสองทศวรรษจนกระทั่งการจากไปของ Ogawa ในปี พ.ศ. 2535 ทว่าผลงานของเขายังคงส่งอิทธิพลอย่างต่อเนื่องต่อผู้สร้างสารคดีในญี่ปุ่นและเอเชียจนถึงปัจจุบัน

Kick the Machine Screening Room เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ Kick the Machine Films จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ก่อตั้งโดย อภิชาติพงศ์ วีระเศรษฐกุล โดยสตูดิโอนั้นมุ่งหมายในการเป็นพื้นที่จัดงานเวิร์คช็อป และจัดฉายภาพยนตร์ รวมถึงผลิตผลงาน Screening Room มุ่งเน้นการจัดฉายสารคดี ภาพยนตร์ทดลอง และผลงานจากผู้สร้างภาพยนตร์ท้องถิ่น

ในภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ Shinsuke Ogawa และ Ogawa Pro ใช้วิธีการเดียวกันกับที่ใช้สร้างหนังเรื่องก่อนๆ โดยการย้ายไปปักหลักอยู่ในพื้นที่สลัม Kotobuchi ในเมืองท่า Yokohama ที่ซึ่งชาวบ้านกว่า 6,000 ชีวิตดิ้นรนเพื่อความอยู่รอดอย่างข้นแค้น ต้องเผชิญกับอุบัติเหตุจากอุตสาหกรรมและโรคภัยไข้เจ็บ สารคดีที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นจึงเป็นเรื่องที่สะเทือนใจที่สุดเรื่องหนึ่งที่ Ogawa Pro สร้างขึ้น ประกอบด้วยภาพเคลื่อนไหวแบบ portrait อันสวยงาม รวมไปถึงเรื่องราวและบทเพลงที่ถูกเก็บงำของผู้คนในชุมชนแห่งนี้ (ICA)

Ogawa ริเริ่ม Red Persimmons เอาไว้ตั้งแต่ปี 1985 ทว่าการตายของเขาทำให้ใช้เวลากว่าสองทศวรรษที่สารคดีชิ้นนี้จะสำเร็จลุล่วงด้วยการสานต่อโดย Peng Xiaolian ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์หญิงชาวจีนผู้นับถือในผลงานและตัวตนของ Ogawa เป็นอย่างมาก ภาพยนตร์เฝ้ามองขั้นตอนอันเชื่องช้าของการผลิตลูกพลับอบแห้ง ที่เริ่มตั้งแต่การเก็บเกี่ยว ปลอกเปลือก อบแห้ง คลุกน้ำตาล ไปจนถึงบรรจุหีบห่อ และแม้กระทั่งความขัดแย้งกับพ่อค้าคนกลาง แม้ว่าในนัยหนึ่งจะถ่ายทอดความยากลำบากของเกษตรกรที่การตรากตรำนั้นมักสวนทางกับผลลัพธ์ที่ได้กลับมา แต่ใจความแท้จริงแล้ว Red Persimmons นั้นมุ่งบันทึกการต่อสู้เพื่อดำเนินวิถีชีวิตของพวกเขา (The A.V. Kick the Machine Films and the Japan Foundation present the inauguration of Kick the Machine Screening Room Programme #1: Shinsuke Ogawa and Ogawa Pro. 

The two-day film programme features three essential documentaries of Shinsuke Ogawa (1936-92), a pioneering figure over the landscape of Japanese post-war documentary and his filmmaking collective Ogawa Pro. Over the course of thirty years of his independent documentary filmmaking career, Ogawa fearlessly devoted himself to address radical politics and social movements and developed a practice based on collaborative processes founding Ogawa Productions in 1968 which emphasised not only the collective approach to filmmaking, but also seeking for new alternative ways of distributing and exhibiting their works to new audiences. Ogawa Pro produced more than twenty films until he died in 1992, their films and style of filmmaking have been influencing documentary filmmakers in Japan and Asia.

All films shown on original 16mm, with English subtitles. Thai synopsis handout is available.

Kick the Machine Screening Room is part of Kick the Machine Films, Chiang Mai, founded by filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The studio dedicates to film workshops, screenings, and productions. The 'Screening Room’ focuses on world documentary, experimental films, and the works of local filmmakers.

Song of the Humans

Following the method developed in the previous films, Shinsuke Ogawa and his collective moved to the slum of Kotobuchi in the port city of Yokohama, where more than 6,000 people were struggling to get by without any means of survival, exposed to industrial accidents and diseases. The result is one of the most moving films produced by the collective, a series of beautifully filmed portraits, voicing the silenced stories and songs of a group of people living in this community. Nippon: Furuyashiki Village

Ogawa plays with the conventions of the science documentary to investigate the damage inflicted by an unusual cold front, while penetrating deep into village history. In tiny Furuyashiki, he finds the entire history of Japan – from ancient sea creatures through the catastrophe of WWII to the quiet violence of the economic miracle. As an old man says, "We thought the paved road would bring modernity; instead, it made it easier for the young people to leave”. (Taiwan International Documentary Festival)


Red Persimmons
Shinsuke Ogawa and Peng Xiaolian

Red Persimmons was begun by Ogawa in 1985 and completed more than a decade later (after his death in 1992) by one of his devotees, Chinese feminist filmmaker Peng Xiaolian. The film follows the slow process of manufacturing dried persimmons—picking, peeling, drying, dusting with fructose, wrapping in cellophane—and haggling with brokers. It's partly a documentary about how hard work meets with increasingly diminished returns, but it's mostly a record of how people organise their lives. (The A.V. Club)
